George Benson once sang "Never give up on a good thing".

I don't know what he was singing about. It probably wasn't wine. But I think his point holds for wine on this occasion.

I bought a case of Domaine Raspail Ay's 2007 Gigondas‬ en primeur, back when it was released. Probably early 2009.

A wine from the Southern Rhone region of France, Gigondas is a village within a few miles of the more famous village of Chateauneuf Du Pape. The two wines are generall...

I like to think I am not a wine snob. However, I have to confess that I noticed a bit of wine snobbery rising to the surface a couple of times over the Easter break. The first came when we had some friends over for Sunday lunch.

My mate brought me a bottle of wine as a gift, Majestic’s new(ish) “Definition Range” Pouilly Fume. I smiled, thanked him, told him he shouldn’t have bothered and chucked...

Since I began writing Wineloon, I have noticed a change. All of a sudden my mates seem to think I am some sort of wine expert.

This phenomenon is most noticeable when it comes to ordering wine in a restaurant. Before Wineloon, my mates and I would all discuss the wine list on a pretty much even footing.

These days I am immediately handed the wine list. "You pick the wine, you're the expert".

And then they all just look at me. Waiting. Waiting for me to select the best wine they have...

Death to Wine of the Week

Time to fess up. I haven't done a wine of the week since the 8th of March, which is about  8 or 9 weeks ago. I am afraid life (i.e. my job, my family and Palace's glorious march to the FA Cup Final) has got in the way a bit. In my defence, I have  written some wine articles since then. I just haven't bothered my arse to write a wine of the week. For those who have noticed, I apologise.

Given this poor show, I have made the decision to stop atte...

ABOUT WINELOON

My name is Simon Reilly. I am a wine writer based in South East London. I am passionate about discovering new and exciting wines which offer value for money. I write about the wines I taste and other related wine stuff that I think is interesting, brilliant or annoying.

My aim is to write about wine in a straight forward way that is accessible to everyone.

I have had my writing published in Root+Bone magazine, Root + VineJancis Robinson's Purple Pages, Glass of Bubbly and Decanter.

I have been shortlisted for a few awards for my writing; the Louis Roederer International Wine Writers' Awards 2017 in the "Emerging Writer" category and the 2017 Millesima Wine Blog Awards in the "Wine Reporter" category.

I also came second in the Born Digital Wine Awards 2017 in the "Best Investigative/Journalistic Wine Story" category.

One of these days I might win one, but as an Aberdeen FC fan, these days I am happy enough with second place. Stand Free.
